My First Hasselblad

Back when I used to play with my dad’s old Minolta, I always dreamed about a professional camera like the one the fashion photographers used to have. These cameras were particular interesting from the way you hold them to the fact that everything you see through the view finder was backwards. The format was something simple, but at the same time unusual: a simple square (2 1/4″ x 2 1/4″ or 6 x 6 Cms). After couple years trying to get a decent one, I was able to find it in eBay. My first Hasselblad!!!!

To my surprise, besides the usual f/stop and shutter speed settings, I found myself metering the light, choosing the right film speed for a particular use, composing the frame, analyzing the weather conditions to have the correct white balance. I found myself going back to the basics of photography.

In this day and age of digital media, sometimes we forget these simple things that initially brought so many people into this media. Off course the Digital Camera has bring more people into the wonderful world of photography, but there is a felling about analog media that always will surpass Digital. In any case, we could discuss this topic for hours; about the grain, about how expensive is to develop now a days, about the versatility of digital cameras, about how convenient it is to have your images in no time, but at the end what really counts is what you like. There is no better pastime that the one you enjoy the most, and for me analog is still alive.

Mi Primera Hasselblad

Cuando jugaba con la Minolta de mi padre, siempre soñaba con tener una cámara profesional como la que los fotógrafos de moda solían tener. Estas cámaras eran especialmente interesantes por la forma en que se manejan y el hecho de ver al revés a través del visor. El formato es simple pero al mismo tiempo poco común: un cuadrado 6 x 6 Cms (2 1 / 4 ” x 2 1 / 4″). Después de varios años tratando de conseguir una cámara decente, tuve la oportunidad de encontrarla en eBay. Mi primera Hasselblad!!!!

Para mi sorpresa, además de la habitual f / stop y la configuración de la velocidad de obturación, me encontré midiendo nuevamente la luz, escogiendo la velocidad de la película adecuada para un uso particular, componiendo con el marco al revés, y analizando las condiciones meteorológicas para que el balance de blancos fuese correcto. Me encontré volviendo a los fundamentos de la fotografía.

En esta época de medios digitales, a veces nos olvidamos de estas cosas tan simples que inicialmente llevaron a tanta gente a experimentar con este medio. Por supuesto la cámara digital ha desbancado a la fotografía análoga, pero la fotografía analógica tiene ese “je ne sais quoi” que siempre superará a la fotografía digital. En cualquier caso, podríamos hablar de este tema durante horas, sobre el grano, sobre lo costoso que es revelar hoy en día, de lo versátil de las cámaras digitales, acerca de lo conveniente que es tener las imágenes al momento, pero al final lo que realmente cuenta es lo que te gusta. No hay mejor pasatiempo que el que más se disfruta, y para mí la fotografía analógica sigue viva.
